What changes does Parallels make (to the boot camp partition) when it runs a boot camp partition as a virtual machine? E.g., install sw?

I want to know whether Parallels makes changes to the boot camp partition, such as installing Parallels Tools, setting up virtual network adapters or making any other changes. Relevant for Mac OS X Leopard, and Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac.

Yes. It does modify the base Basecamp OS. It installs a driver set and installs a set of tools for coordinating copy and paste etc.

VERY IMPORTANT: The above driver set will make it very difficult to run Microsoft Office in both Bootcamp XP AND Parallels XP. The changes in driver set cause MS Office to assume that you have changed machines and force you to re-register the software.

If you are going to be running Linux ignore the above.

Does the driver set also interfere with Vista (32-bit)? This sounds like exactly the sort of thing that would make me skip Parallels altogether on this, since I rely on MS Office software on the Vista Bootcamp side (in fact, the reason I use Bootcamp at all is because MS Excel for Mac is so useless for heavy data-crunching, has weird keyboard shortcuts, et c.).

It depends. It's only an issue if you sometimes use your Mac as a Mac and sometimes as a Windows machine. If you always boot into Mac OS X and run Windows only in Parallels the problem never occurs (as long as you register Office in Parallels).

I never use office expect in parallels (I rarely boot into windows) so this isn't an issue for me.
