Premier Pro CS3 (we haven't upgraded yet) has produced the desired effects as well, as long as the subject and green screen have been properly lit. Stand alone, it's retailed for about $799.00 USD.
Two things about Adobe: lots of memory and the fastest processor you can afford make rendering times much more bearable.

Real-time Chroma Key Platform
Can anyone recommend a chroma key software or hardware solution that costs less than $1,000 and enables real-time capture and display, ie., without any video delay. A full studio platform is my true goal. FYI, we looked at Adobe Visual Communicator, which comes close to fulfilling our needs, but has the A/V sync issue after keying. Thanks

Spoke to their techs who said this is not actually a realtime solution.

We do chroma key two ways here, one is hardware based through the switcher and a green screen when we do live - but that sounds like it's way out of your budget range. Premier Pro CS3 (we haven't upgraded yet) has produced the desired effects as well, as long as the subject and green screen have been properly lit. Stand alone, it's retailed for about $799.00 USD.

when you say bearable, how much delay, assuming fast processor and loads of RAM

When we've captured software based green screen, or pretty much anything else, we've seen about a 1 second delay from the moment of action to when we see it on the confidence monitors. The audio has the exact same delay, so we're assuming that the external capture box is taking that long to capture and feed the audio / video to Adobe. There aren't any lost / dropped frames, just the 1 second delay.
Our two primary mobile NLE's on carts are dual core Intel based HP workstations that exhibit the 1 second delay. Our primary stationary NLE is a custom built Intel D975XBX with a fast dual core processor and 4 gigs of memory. It's shown to encode very close to real time, maybe a 1/2 of a second delay if we have a straight signal from the DA, or 3/4 second delay if we take video out of a DVCAM deck.
Our next NLE is being spec'd out as I type, and will be at least a quad core machine with 4 gigs of memory. Once it's built and installed, I can recheck and see how much closer to real time Adobe is encoding.

If you're working on a major video project, like event video or film, or even commercials, you need to be working with a professional editing software application. These can handle everything from digital video (DV) to high definition (HD) and everything in between. Have you looked at Adobe's OnLocation? Originally Serious Magic's DVRack, it is a field monitoring software solution for video cameras connected to a workstation or laptop.
