VLC gets my vote for many of the same reasons that bdegrande mentioned. The most recent version also has the ability to record DVDs.

Clearly iTunes if you have or are intending to get an iPod. Of the others, I like VLC a lot, small, lightweight, and plays many many formats.

IMHO older versions of Winamp are the best, specfically pre version 3.

iTunes use to be the best but as of late it is a dog. It gets worse with time. I have a core duo with 4 gbs of RAM and it still seems to have some lag. I mean I still use it.

I hear good things about songbird the Mozilla solution. Give that a try.
