If I'd choose between being wealthy or smart, I'd choose being smart.
If you're smart, you can achieve your goals in life. You can be rich, you can also be famous if you want to, you be powerful, etc. You can plan your life well and be successful in anything you venture. Think of the wealthy people right now. Bill Gates for example. You think Bill Gates will be the wealthiest man on earth if he isn't smart? Of course not.
If you are wealthy but not smart enough, you can lose everything you have in just a blink of the eye. If you're not playing well in your field, then pretty soon, you'll lose every cent you have.
In life, you just have to be smart... wealth comes later. :)

Being smart doesn't equal wealth down the road, there are plenty of people with the smarts who are upstaged by the wealthy or someone who knew the right people or were in the right place at the right time.
If smarts was all it took there'd be a lot more millionaires than we have today. I think wishing for smarts is kind of an admission of failure at wealth.
I see that everyone who chose one of the two always picked smarts. Seriously, if smarts can make you rich, wouldn't you be rich by now?
Oh and in reference to the wording of the question, you may not see wealthy people who are very wise, but being smarter doesn't automatically make you wiser either.
If I'm rich I can always learn. If I'm smart there's no guarantee I'll get rich. Yeah, money works for me. :)

I prefer to be smart rather than wealthy because wealth can be robbed or if you are not smart enough the money won't last. But if you are smart and not wealthy you will have a very interesting life. Smart people knows how to create things, they know how to solve problems, and most of all they know ways to survive and make money eventually if they think being wealthy is smart enough.
