Why do women have all the power when it comes to being a redhead?

After reading this article by John Devore
http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/wayoflife/09/15/tf.why.men.love.redheads/index.html?iref=newssearch
... it looks like women have the upper hand in the redhead game.

I've never heard a female talk about how she likes redheaded men, but I hear from men all day long about their preference for a specific hair type.

As a redheaded female, do we have the upper hand when it comes to hair color choice among the sexes?

What about the redheaded men?

The attraction of the Redhaired Woman...
Perhaps its simply a matter of biology.
It makes a certain evolutionary logic that men would pursue those women who, by virtue of a few mutated chromosomes, stand out from the crowd.
The universe makes only so many redheads, and so it makes an impression when a man is beauty-napalmed by one.
Genetic rarity is basically seen from two different perspectives, either the view that it is a freak of nature, or that it is a gift of nature.

These stereotypes about redheads had to have started somewhere—maybe with the people who dealt with the first redheads? However, the true origin of red headed people is still shrouded in mystery. There aren’t many theories, and one of the most popular is firmly rooted in myth. This fanciful legend traces the genesis of all redheads to Prince Idon of Mu.
According to the legend, when an oracle foretold the imminent demise of his country, Prince Idon sailed with the entire population to the island of Atlantis. The ships arrived at sunset, and the prince was so struck by the beauty of the setting sun that he wished out loud to preserve the glorious sight forever. Instantly, his hair was transformed to many gleaming shades of red, mirroring the stunning sunset, and the images of the golden leaves on the trees became freckles upon his face. His wish had been magically granted, and all of his descendents—every redhead ever born, according to the legend—had the same sunset-inspired hair and complexion. The modern spreading of this legend has led to many redheads declaring themselves (tongue-in-cheek, one hopes) princes and princesses of Atlantis.

According to Cort Cass in his The Redhead Handbook, the continued presence of redheads was one of the issues that “haunted” Charles Darwin, because he could not fit redheads into his Survival of the Fittest theory. Mr Cass proposes a “Sexual Selection Theory,” that, as opposed to a survival advantage, would provide a procreation advantage. He compares redheads to peacocks, whose impractical, predator-magnetic, heavy tails would seem to make them a logical choice for extinction. However, it is the peacock with the biggest, heaviest, brightest tale that attracts the most peahens, and hence has a better change of successful procreation. Mr. Cass hypothesizes that when a potential mate saw a redhead that had reached maturity despite the apparent physical disadvantages, that potential mate instinctively knew that the redhead possessed other strengths—namely a strong survival instinct that manifested in toughness and intelligence.

Sun myths were the focal point of nearly all ancient cultures’ religious cosmology.” the branch of metaphysics that deals with the nature of the universe. These sun myths often featured redheaded humans representing sun entities. This may be one of the reasons for the supernatural mystique that has surrounded redheads from ancient times.

A few noteworthy tidbits:

Helen of Troy and the Greek goddess Aphrodite (Venus)―two of the most beautiful and sensual (albeit mythical) women in the world―have been depicted as redheads.

“Testarossa,” the name given to the high-end sports car by Ferrari, literally translates from Italian to, “The Red Head.”

The Cherokee word for redheads, “Seynatawnee” translates in English to “hair of the rising sun.”

In Scotland, “If you happen to walk any distance between two redheaded girls, it is a sign that you will soon be very rich.”

The Vikings are invariably portrayed as intense, aggressive and adventurous, and are generally credited with spreading the redhead gene around.

Cleopatra, the name usually conjures up the image of a sensual and extremely gorgeous female in our minds, is thought to have been a redhaired woman.

I don't know why a certain percentage of men are attracted to red haired women and I don't think any definitive answers have been reached.
Perhaps its that they simply smell good to a sufficient percentage of the population.
Continuing scientific research on pheromones and their affects on the coupling of humans suggests that people “sniff out” partners who are procreationally compatible.
Never underestimate the power of the pheromone.

I think it has to do with, some character trait with redheads. First redheads are very sure of themselves, belive in therselves. They also go for what they want, hard to stop them until they get it. Lots of awesome traits you find more and more with every redhead..Also it is just a beautiful color! hope this helps..

I don't know, I can only speculate....

Men are more influenced by physical attributes anyway, so it may be that men are more prone to having a look that they go for, and it's a lesser factor with women.

Standing out in anyway doesn't hurt. It doesn't swing anything, but being noticed at all is step one.

The character attributes that redheads supposedly have might be more attractive to the typical male than a typical female. Men are possibly more interested in having "fiery" partners than women are.

Personally I can't say that hair color is that big of a factor with me though.

I'm a redhead. And I feel very beautiful and confident. Maybe being confident makes us redheads look like we are powerful. Also red is a powerful color and can raise blood pressure. Red gets allot of attention and is the most emotionally intense of all colors!

Well...a natural redhead or a created redhead...? That is the question.

A girl who is a natural redhead (I can speak from experience...) has been 'different' since childhood. Someone who stands out, mostly in a good way and sometimes it can be a not so good thing that kids or men 'tease' you about. Like the old guy on the corner who calls out "Hey Red."

Either way, it's a very obvious characteristic that contributes to the development of your persona - that knowledge of who we are - and some of that is what we look like.

All the cliches about redheads may or may not be true. But I think if they are they only truly apply to natural redheads.

I can also speak to the truth you may have heard about only one redhead can be in a room at a time. It is true, if I go to a party and another redhead is also there, its a bit awkward. We redheads are used to being unique :)

I have the feeling that if we were to meet up at a party... we'd team up and take it over!

With other female redheads, I've always thought 'the more, the merrier'. If we were to all team up, we could easily take over the world!
(maybe I should start a recruiting office... mmm)

Natural redheaded women definitely have an advantage when it comes to men.

I will go a step further and admit that different shades of red hair and different hair/eye color combinations effect me differently.

Dark or bright red hair with startlingly green eyes scare the bejesus out of me. I nearly expect those women to secretly dress in armor and carry swords, looking for a chance to decapitate me and present my head on a tray to whoever happens to be the fortunate(?) owner of their fielty.

Lighter red hair and blue eyes melt my soul and if those women but knew that I would pledge my entire being to follow them to my death as if they were some modern day Joan of Arc. In my captivated state of being, they become the elven princess from Lord of the Rings.

My Girlfriend is a red head. Funny I used to like women with dark hair. But when I met her of the red tresses and blue eyes, I was a goner.

Redheaded Irish chicks grow up learning to kick butt to fight off boys because they're cute when they're young and then they turn out hot when their older which gives them the power of confidence from years of past experience beating down the weak little boys.

Though my picture here is black and white, in full living color, I'm a redhead, though I'm much more auburn now than when I was a kid.

I know growing up all the guys who were redheads were the 'class clowns' and jokers... I admit, I think red hair looks better on a woman than on a man.

As a child, I hated being an orangey redhead, and by the time I was about 16, I was dyeing my hair medium golden brown to tone down the brassiness, and even then, the red shone through!

I don't know why redheads are preferred in women and not men, but I do know that fads change. When I was younger, red hair wasn't popular on a woman, and today, it's very popular. There will likely come a day in the future where red hair falls out of fashion again.

Isn't it strange how perceptions change? When I was a kid, I heard all sorts of names: Carrot Head, I love Lucy, copper top...and it hurt. My Irish grannies (both redheads) gave me the confidence to ignore those taunts. Then, as an adult, red hair came back into favor and was considered attractive. Weird, huh?

I don't know what to say about the redheaded men. There are a few in my family and they seem to do just fine. Although I remember redheaded boys back in the day had a hard go of it.

Hmm... I don't know, because to me, males with red hair - I mean the *real* orange carrot color - are just as curious to look at as women with red hair.

I can tell if it's artifically coloured red hair, and women are more easily accepted with artifically coloured hair than guys, so manybe that's what you're refering to.
