I'm sorry you have a fear of masks.
I would have said a few years ago that masks didn't bother me, but when I went to my first Mardi Gras, I found that all the people wearing the same masks up on the floats gave me the heebie jeebies.

Now, about clowns.
I'm sure the serial killer John Wayne Gacy being labeled 'The Killer Clown" made the fear of clowns more of a reality than something based on just imagination.
Ultimately, I would have to give credit to here to children and their limitless imagination. When we create a fear of the unknown as children from clowns and other characters in costume (Santa & Easter Bunny) they will stick with us for quite some time.
(hey, I have that button too!)

You don't know who is behind the mask - you probably don't want to see a masked person walk into a bank.
I imagine some horror movies featuring clowns - It, for example - may contribute to one's fear of clowns.

also, some of them can be downright mean, teasing and loud. they are out there on the streets or parks and having fun at a carnival or parade (as adults) and don't realize they are scaring quiet little kids...

• Everyone had great answers, BUT I liked this one the most! I agree, it all seems to start as a child.

""People are typically frightened by things which are wrong in some way, wrong in a disturbingly unfamiliar way," Prof Salkovskis says." You don't know who is behind the mask - you probably don't want to see a masked person walk into a bank.

Not all clowns wear masks. I have a fear of masks, but I dont really think I am afraid of clowns. It was an answer I knew I was gonna get but was hoping people would avoid. I was going to put down please don't say the movie It unless you had a lot to say about the movie, but decided not to.

My source above states "And it probably comes as no surprise to horror fans that a University of Sheffield study of 250 children for a report on hospital design suggests the children find clown motifs "frightening and unknowable"." Clowns mask their face with either a physical mask or makeup. And concerning It - I know a few people afraid of clowns after seeing It, making it a reasonable inclusion in my opinion. Haunted corn mazes around Hallowe'en frequently feature clowns in an unnatural setting. I imagine this may be something people afraid of clowns may expect out of normal clowns. As depicted in the picture, a clown with no makeup isn't very scary.

because they wear too much exaggerated makeup and walk right over to a quiet little kid and speak very loudly and boisterously! also, some of them can be downright mean, teasing and loud. they are out there on the streets or parks and having fun at a carnival or parade (as adults) and don't realize they are scaring quiet little kids...

In my opinion, I would say that many people are afraid of clowns because clowns are really ugly. My youngest son says he is afraid of clowns because clowns throw pies at people and then everybody laughs, except you. My neighbors kid used to say that he was afraid of clowns because many clowns were tall and scary. So, maybe, everyone that is afraid of clowns has their reasons. There is not just one reason.
