A better question would be, "Who was Liu Hung Chieh?" He died in 1986.
He was the son of a wealthy landowning doctor, whose family had been doctors for 10 generations. During middle school, he was initiated into the original ba gua martial arts school in Beijing. He was a teacher at the university level for a short while before becoming involved in martial arts and meditation full time. He was head of instructors at the National Martial Arts Institute for 3 years.
In middle age, after becoming an accomplished master of the internal martial arts of hsing-I and ba gua, he went to Hong Kong and lived in the home of Wu Jien Chuan, wo along with his father cofounded the Wu style of tai chi. There, Liu became deeply impressed in Tien Tai Buddhism, after attending a lecture, and entered the monastery as a student. He was formally declared enlightened in Mahayan Buddhism after a brief few years. He then went to the mountains of Western China for the practice of intensive meditation practices from masters of esoteric branches of Taoism.
He then returned to Beijing and was unable to move his family to Taiwan during the political upheaval period. He lived there as a hermit, secretly practicing. He met Bruce Frantzis, who had studied under various different masters in Japan, India and Taiwan, and accepted him as a student because he had had a dream of him beforehand. Liu Hung Chieh adopted Bruce Frantzis' as his son and was his master teacher.
Bruce inherited Liu Hung Chieh's teaching lineage. Bruce was one of the two students whom Liu Hung Chieh passed along his teachings. These teachings are based on the "water method" of taoist meditation.
