I took "Literature of the African Diaspora" in college (I was an English major) and found nearly every one of the nine books we were assigned to be amazing. If I had to choose a favorite I would say it was "Ways of Dying" by Zakes Mda. It happens to be a very dark book, but even though the culture was so far from my own I still felt the narrative pull me in deeper every page I read. Reading it in the context of the other books assigned also made a different impression on me than were it read in isolation because I had works to compare it to as well as the varied opinions of my peers and instructor.

(We read the following in this order. Sorry I can't remember all of the author's names off the top of my head)
Passing
Crossing the River
Death of a King's Horseman
Nervous Conditions
The Dew Breaker
Changes
Maps
Ways of Dying
Caucasia

• All these suggestions are great, but this one piqued my curiosity the most. Thanks to everyone!

Brief History of Time by Dr. Stephen Hawking. He has the ability to make the very technical/scientific easy for the lay-person...

If you liked that book and think he can explain the complex world to the layperson consider reading "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene. I am about halfway through it and it is one of my favorite books. It explains how superstring theory aims to solve the inherent conflict between the theory of general relativity and quantum mechanics.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Actually, just about anything Gaiman has ever written tops my list. He's an amazing author, even if he does live in the states these days.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. This ruined me for all other fantasy, except the Crystal Cave series by Mary Stewart.
