Theory regarding the origin of 420:
A group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, United States in 1971 would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana.

Ah, no wonder I never heard anything about this. By 1971, high school was behind me, and I was living in Fort Ord.

You are right to check Snopes on this sort of thing. They debunk most of the common false origins such as police codes.
