What is a good way to get people to stop judging pregnant women when they have a single unit of alcohol or coffee in public?

Find a scientifically proven study about how small amounts of alcohol and/or coffee during pregnancy are harmless and possibly even beneficial. When anyone scoffs at you for having a drink, pull out the article and share it with them.
The only way to change people's reaction is to change their knowledge. Of course, this is assuming that there is even a scientific article that says that small amounts of alcohol are okay during pregnancy.

People used to have bad views about people with mental disabilities. We're slowly changing that by getting people with mental disabilities out in public more. Give them more knowledge on the subject, and it will change their minds.

You may disagree, but the fact of the matter is, no amount of alcohol during pregnancy is safe. Personally, I don't care if the woman is having one beer a MONTH, the fact is, the alcohol is still passing through the placenta to the baby. Yes, most statistics you see out there on FAS and other birth defects are studies on excessive use of alcohol during pregnancy, but there are still studies that examine moderate alcohol use that also say women should err on the side of caution and just avoid alcohol in general.
There's plenty of studies out there on the link between caffeine during pregnancy and the neurological damage it can do, including learning disabilities, ADD, and behaviorial problems. The link below describes a review that compiles information from over 200 studies that examine these facts.
Quite frankly, I think it's rather selfish of women who just HAVE to have that coffee or that glass of wine, etc. Give me a break, is it really that important to get a buzz or get a jolt of energy that you are going to put your child at risk? Go eat an apple, it can give you a bigger energy boost than a cup of coffee and it's actually good for you and your child. As for the alcohol, if it's really that hard for somebody to go 9 months without hitting the bottle, maybe they have some issues they need to tackle before becoming a parent.

Agreed!
Just don't do it.
And if you are gonna do it, and you do it in public, you have to expect to be criticized.
Is it really worth it?

We don't know that as you said, "no amount of alcohol during pregnancy is safe."
In fact there are isn't any evidence that small amounts of alcohol or caffeine cause significant harm to the fetus. There is a bigger risk to the baby from the mother getting in a car and driving somewhere, or eating a lot of fish. People don't get judgmental when a pregnant woman does these things.
Sure there are links between birth defects and alcohol and caffeine use, but show me something that shows a correlation with MODERATE use, because neither of your sources do that.
And for those that say you shouldn't do it simply because it MIGHT be harmful, do you really feel its your place to judge someone else based on something you don't know for sure?
And this argument that you shouldn't do it because you will be criticized for it, what is that? Should gay people have to pretend they are straight just so they won't get criticized? Should all teen mothers abort their children so that they won't be criticized? That is not an argument, just a distraction.

If you saw someone dangling their baby over a balcony, Michael Jackson style, would you judge them as being stupid and risking their babies life? BUT WAIT..they might NOT drop it, right? That logic is incredibly flawed, and I hope you can see that.
Approaching a human life with a 'this MIGHT NOT hurt it' is absurd and quite frankly, totally igorant. If you don't see the legitimate risk courtesy of literally hundreds of scientific studies proving that alcohol has a negative effect on a fetus, then I don't know what to tell you. Enjoy your drink.

You missed my point. I asked for ONE study that shows a negative effect with consumption of SMALL amounts of alcohol (~1 drink per week). I can't find one.
The Michael Jackson thing is different because there IS an obvious risk associated with dangling a baby over a balcony. However we don't know that there is an obvious risk associated with SMALL alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
We know that there is a danger in eating a lot of fish during pregnancy, because the mercury in the fish can harm the baby. However, does this mean that pregnant women shouldn't eat fish?
"Approaching a human life with a 'this MIGHT NOT hurt it' is absurd and quite frankly, totally igorant." I guarantee that you do this everyday. Everyday you make decisions that could possibly endanger human life. However you assess the risk as small enough that it is acceptable. I agree that we should do everything we reasonably can to protect human life, but the only way to ensure that nobody will die in the future is to kill everyone today. We have to accept some risks.

I think the best way to not be judged is to hide it more solemnly. It may not be safe to drink while your pregnant, but in some cases it still happens. If you are to drink while your pregnant, expect to be judged when you do it in public. I mean, was it immoral to drink when you where pregnant in biblical times? I don't think it was with all the wine consumption. We only frown upon it due to scientific statistics. The best way to keep people from judging pregnant when who choose to drink is to not drink in public at all, and if so very very discretely. Unless your very comedic about it and just wear a T-Shirt, that says "Don't Mind Me I'm Putting It Up For Adoption," then people may actually laugh instead of judge.

Skipping the statistics and argument over whether the judgment in correct, in favor of answering the question - there is no good way to get people to stop judging. Right or wrong, the public perception is that any amount of alcohol or coffee could cause harm to the fetus. You can try arguing with them, carry copies of the research with you to hand out, or whatever - it won't keep the next person from judging you in just the same way.
The only realistic way to prevent the problem is to stop consuming those drinks in public - or find a way to hide your pregnancy.
