Homelessness is a very serious situation to experience. It is also an embarrassing experience. Many panhandlers don't want to accept help because accepting help is confirming to them that they have failed and most of them don't want to feel like failures. These people need more than help. They need counseling. Their self-esteem is so low they need support. I have worked in an homeless shelter and I know homeless people are often discriminated against. Becoming homeless brings on a stigma from society and no one want to be considered homeless because it means less than.

What do you think of the issue of homelessness?
Most industrialized countries have government services and social communities that help those who lose their homes. But what about those who are perpetually homeless? How can they be helped?
More importantly... Do they actually *want* to be helped? What can be done?
Frequently, alongside certain highway off-ramps or under bridges, one sees the same homeless people in the same spots. Apparently in some situations, they have defined "territories" where each person has picks dibs to panhandle at a defined spot!
I've heard from friends in social services, that social workers have approached these "professional panhandlers" in our area. After being offered help, the panhandlers don't want to live in shelters and churches, or receive financial aid.
So maybe some people are not as "homeless" as was thought? Perhaps their definition of "home" is just different?
