PETA stands for “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” and if it stood only for this I would say I support it. There is a need for such an organization, unfortunately, in my opinion; the balance has been tipped by extremism. All of life is sacred and all living creatures need to be treated in ethical ways. Let’s not be fools and think that in the world, in America, animals are not being abused. Almost every week the media reports on animal abuse, from puppy farms, abandoned animals, mistreated pets, and yes abuse in the food industry as well. And do not be a fool to think that if there were not organizations like PETA these abuses would increase as well as be more common when there is a dollar to be made or saved by corporations. BUT, and there is always a but of some kind to be had.
The media also reports on extremism within PETA and some of its members and supporters. The subject matter is a high charged emotional matter and with that, unless there are restraints, extremism can arise and as has been seen in acts by PETA extremism does occur. PETA through its extremes only harms the efforts that it stands for and this is unfortunate

First the above comedy video is cool, but obviously it is anti PETA and in its own way quite biased. PETA stands for “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” and if it stood only for this I would say I support it. silverhammer, of course I watched the video, love Penn and Teller, they are fantastic comedians. Of course the video is a comedy, that’s what makes it so potent in getting their message across! Comedy can be an extremely powerful tool in delivering messages, and their message is quite anti PETA. Perhaps you missed or I was not successful in presenting what I was trying to explain. PETA stands for the People for the Ethical Treat of Animals, whether they do a good job at ensuring the ethical treatment or not or whether they go to extremes (as this video likes to play on and point out) and of course they do, is not my point, nor was it the question.
I agree with you if the dollars were not there, there is a good chance that some of the people in the organization would not be there either, but that is common of almost all organizations. It is obvious that the antics of PETA and some of its members is distasteful to you and you seem to have strong negative feelings about the organization, in that you have answered the question very effectively and the use of the video was well done. Personally I have mixed feelings about PETA and their and some of their members behaviour, but they have been an organization that has many, many times pointed out the unethical treatment of animals that is happening all around us. BUT, when antics and message become destructive, mean-spirited, and violent or offensive, then it also becomes hurtful to the cause that they are suppose to stand for. Do I support the cause and notion of ethical treatment of animals yes I do, do I think PETA does a good job in bringing to light the unethical treatment of some yes I do, do I think PETA is often extreme yes I do, do I support PETA as a member no I don’t.
What do I think of PETA, well it’s mixed both good and bad. Just as comedy can be an effective way to deliver a message so too can some forms of extremism be very effective in delivering a message or pointing a spot light on the unethical.
Thanks for the response

If there wasn't money to be made by PETA doing what they do, the current leaders of the organization wouldn't be there. Those who subscribe to PETA (and support the lifestyles of the leaders) may be sincere but there are other organizations they could go through to get action that are less motivated by profit and methods that are less violent themselves.
