Sometimes people were just born to be wizards

Fantasy is a huge part of some peoples lives from Dungeons and Dragons to Lord of the Rings. I think there are lots of people who fantasized about casting spells when they were young . . . and some may continue to think about it. ^_^
One fun way to express this is with a good wizard costume, so when given the opportunity to go to a LARP (Live Action Role Playing Game) or a costume party people roll with it very well.

The look of the traditional wizard costume presumes a beard.

A beard is traditionally a sign of wisdom too and wizards are presumed to be very wise and all knowing with a magical flare.
Since you have chosen Lon as the example, consider his job. He is part of a team who is creating a certain variety of magic online. To us he has a kind of wisdom too since he is in the know about the workings and inner workings of Mahalo.
Plus wizards can sometimes see the future. He knows what plans are in store for us here so in a way he can see the future.
He does have the wizard look too, albeit a younger one. Obviously he has a sense of fun too.
If he is the wizard in the Mahalo court, what does that make Jeff and the others?

And they are dorks and wish they would have been born in a Lord of the Rings book instead of in Wisconsin, where instead of defeating some beast and getting the girl, they are living in someones basement, weather it's their mom or their more successful sibling.

Some men look WAY too comfortable and natural in a wizard costume. Why is this?

haha, well, I'm not a guy who wears wizard costumes, but as a woman, I can tell you that floating fabric around your legs is more comfortable than pants. Maybe men who happen to choose to be wizards for Halloween are just pleasantly surprised at how instantly comfortable they are?

From childhood on we get certain images of what a character should look like, a princess, a villain, a knight or a wizard for example. When someone fits those images that come from books. movies, stories and television, they look comfortable in the role. A beard is traditionally a sign of wisdom too and wizards are presumed to be very wise and all knowing with a magical flare.

Because it's just cool, I mean wizards are totally B.A. And they are dorks and wish they would have been born in a Lord of the Rings book instead of in Wisconsin, where instead of defeating some beast and getting the girl, they are living in someones basement, weather it's their mom or their more successful sibling.

I suspect the true answer is... it's no different whether it's a wizard cosume or a tux, some people are awkward and self-conscious, some people are just confident and have a ball.
