In the short term, it's one less Democrat in the Senate (though since Kennedy is from Massachusetts, he will likely be replaced by another). It's always difficult to tell if someone was influential enough to have a "martyr" effect on their party, and if anybody was, it was Kennedy. The name alone should have an influence.

Unfortunately, American politics in the modern era is quite sporadic. It is likely to have a short-term effect as people flock to his causes, but the 24/7 news cycle will soon lose interest in him, and the American people will once again become obsessed with the death of Michael Jackson.
