Aside from satisfying physiological urges inherent to all sexually reproducing animals, man is also motivated to impress women to fulfill his sometimes contradicting role in society, that of leader and of obedient servant.

In impressing a woman, a man hopes to gain a mate, over whom he shall impose his paternalistic role of family/tribal leader; yet, at the same time, he hopes to gain a mate that will not only comfort him in times of turmoil, but perhaps even tell him what to do when he strays.

It comes down to the classic manly roar of, Me Man, Me king of Castle, until he gets balled out by the wife for not taking the trash out.

This quote by Lord Byron exemplifies this, it is basically the can't live with them, can't live without them, but in a far more eloquent tone.
