Is the United Nations useless?

Since its creation the UN has been a major force in world politics, but yet it has been ineffective in preventing, and slow to stop, genocides like the ones in Rwanda and Darfur.

No. It gets all the nations together to talk, even when they are grandstanding by recalling their ambassadors to the countries where they need them most. They also hammer out useful treaties from time to time, and have agencies which do a lot of good in the world. They get the major powers talking whenever a big crisis comes up. That sort of thing is not automatic you know, consider the many total failures to communicate throughout history.

The UN is not a world government. Even if it were, it would not be able to solve all the world's problems. But it certainly is not useless.

Asking if the UN is useless is like asking if Democracy is useless because corrupt or incompetent politicians keep getting elected. Consider the bottom line, the world without a UN would be worse.

As long as United Nations does not have it's own army/navy/air force, it will remain useless.

Adding to that, 5 countries with veto power, make it more useless - China, France, Russia (formerly the Soviet Union), the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

Maybe if peaceful countries withdraw their membership and stop participating in the United Nations in protest, will force the United Nations to abandon its old methods of dealing with non-peaceful and non-humanitarian nations.

Yes, and I hope it remains that way.

As far as I can tell, the United Nations is just a place to discuss what should be done but not do it. I'm not sure it should exist. Nations who want to cheat, murder, and steal will do it regardless of UN orders, and honorable countries already have leaders who do not need to be accountable to the opinions of should not have to answer to the UN. In other words, it doesn't stop the bad and it handicaps the good.

It's useful if you're a terrorist or a drug lord.
