Interesting... I am reading a book right now called the Mayan Factor, it is hard to separate fact from fiction when people talk about the 2012 subject, I think it's much more interesting to study the facts. The mayans were a people who were great astronomers, they understood that the universe worked in cycles, the mayan calander is just a very acurate astronomical calander that details different cycles, it shows the major cycles and the smaller cycles that occur within, 2012 is just the end of one of the major cycles, we have been heading there for about 5000 years this is a very gradual transition, nothing will suddenly happen, we will simply begin a new cycle. If you want to get more into it there are many people have extrapolated this to mean all sorts of things, one thing is for certain the universe is cyclical, the big question is does the human race react to the cycles of the cosmos, if so then we will be entering into a time very similar astronomically as when the mayans first made this calander, I guess it wouldn't hurt to study that time period, I think it is about 3000bc htis was about the time that china had it's first known emporor when societies began to get more sophisticated, it was a defining moment for humans coming together and becoming more coopereative and forming governments rather clan for themselves. We shall see sone enough.

If you're asking whether they just got decemated before getting the chance to make version 2.0, no, they didn't. Their calendar intentionally ended in 2012. I base that on the fact that they had the calendar in use long before they were decemated.
And finally, they'll be wrong just like all the others. There will only be one correct person, and that will happen by luck. Statistically, it probably won't be the Mayan calendar prediction. We wouldn't know it anyway because we will have stopped existing.

Is the Mayan calendar accurate to foretell the end of the world in 2012?
Or, did their civilization simply get decimated before their scholars could complete version 2.0 of their calendar?

No, because there have been countless failed apocalyptic predictions in the past, and there is no reason to expect this one to be any different. The Mayan calendar may not have even predicted the end of the world, just a major change.

The world will not end in 2012. They will only be the most recent one to be wrong on the day that their prediction fails. If you're asking whether they just got decemated before getting the chance to make version 2.0, no, they didn't. Their calendar intentionally ended in 2012. I base that on the fact that they had the calendar in use long before they were decemated.

GOD will predict our end, that is final. there is never a guaranteed day in our lives we never know if we will wake up the next day. so for now just love yourselfs and love your family and dont be a s--tty person, St. Peter will let you know whether you are in the "in" crowd or not. have a happy life. stop obssesing over things that havent happend and are only predictions otherwise, you will be living the life that those predictors will want you to live, be your own puppet, and cut the strings off PUTOS!!!

If I could edit my answer, I would point out my own ignorance. The Mayan calendar doesn't END in 2012. An era just ends, and another one begins just the same.
But if you're still scared:

Neither. The Mayan calendar does not "foretell" anything, it simply reaches it's end on the 21st of December,2012. Its based on a mathematical formula that has proven very accurate, and it just ends on that day. The Mayans called this the end of a cycle, which were celebrated by them and does not necessarily signify the end of the world. The Mayans were a very interesting culture that we know very little about, and what they actually expected to happen in 2012 is unknown, I guess we'll find out when it gets here. Which is less than 4 years away now so make sure to live it up just in case :)

The Mayan calender comes to the end of a cycle in 2012. Mayan computers are facing a giant "Year 2000" problem that will cost a fortune to fix. Rather than spend the money on reprogramming, Mayan tour guides at archeological sites are claiming that the world may end then. This would greatly offend the followers of the other major religions because 2012 is not a "Big Round Number" in their religions' respective calendars and they would lose prestige. They need not worry. The omnipotent Flying Spaghetti Monster will not allow the Mayan Gods to end the world on that date. FSM does not like the Mayans or their Gods because even though the Mayans live along the Caribbean coast they refuse to talk like a pirate. The world is safe in His Noodly Appendages.
