No, it' s not all that bad. However, atheism requires as much blind faith as any other religion because atheists claim that they can know the truth about the existence of God. Agnostics, on the other hand, admit that they just don't know the answers.

I am a strong atheist myself, and I also hold a degree and MA in theology (as bizarre as that might sound). I've gone beyond the point of saying "I don't believe in god", to whole heartedly believing that no god exists. Yes, there is a distinct difference btween the two.
When CERN creates big bangs in labs, and with more complex understanding of neurotheology, it's impossible for me to say that there is a god.
Anyway, back to the point. Atheists are generally morally sound. The vast majority of us seek to improve human existance and promote longevity through science. While religion tends to worship the concept of death (better life in the afterlife, and so forth), we are more committed to making the most of the life we have without being confined to only doing good to promote what might happen to us after.
As jbennettry said, being the best person that you can is the only thing that matters.

As long as you try to be the best person you can be, I don't think it matters what your religious beliefs are.

No, neither atheism nor atheists are bad...as religion would have you believe. I am a strong atheist myself, and I also hold a degree and MA in theology (as bizarre as that might sound). I've gone beyond the point of saying "I don't believe in god", to whole heartedly believing that no god exists. Yes, there is a distinct difference btween the two.
