The Amish are a conservative Christian community similar to the Mennonites. The hold services in each others homes, have commnunion twice a year, practice foot washing, do not believe in music for their services.

They believe in the importance of individual Bible study and the necessity of living a life free of sin after adult baptism. They Amish are set apart from other Mennonites in their great emphasis on the values of humility, family, community, and separation from the world.

Two key concepts for understanding Amish practices are their revulsion of Hochmut (pride, arrogance, haughtiness) and the high value they place on Demut (humility) and Gelassenheit (calmness, composure, placidity). This all translates into a reluctance to be forward, self-promoting, or to assert oneself in any way. The willingness to submit to the will of God, as expressed through group norms, is at odds with the individualism that is central to general American culture.

The Amish are a sect of Christianity that believe modern technology and the exchanging of currency for goods goes against the word of God. So, they live the way people did hunderds of years ago; without electricity, cars, telephones, etc. However, because of modern society intruding on their beliefs, they are now being forced to deal with currency somewhat in order to survive in the world. Bartering just isn't cutting it completely anymore. I'm sure they have to pay property taxes at least.

Incidentally, they also believe wearing bright colors goes against the word of God, so they all wear very drab looking clothing, however, their quilts are some of the most beautiful and brightly colored you have ever seen.
