In a rough economy, how can record Super Bowl ad sales be explained?

Super Bowl heavyweights GM and Fedex aren't even in the mix this year.

In a recession more people are likely to increase their alcohol consumption, and the Superbowl is typically a time and a place where people go to drink and party, therefore I believe the advertisers saw this as the perfect time to capitalize on getting people's attention and advertise to them.
