You know, I HATE admitting this, but to a fair degree the answer is yes. Ignorance is bliss, and at one point in time people had few wants other than a loving family.
That being said, I wouldn't trade it back. In my pursuit of success I face far more adversity than people with smaller goals, but I've already achieved a few milestones up to this point, so I can confirm that it's all 100% worth it!
Yes, there is a large portion of American that's unhappy because of failed expectations. However, if the number is that large, you have to wonder how many of them were truly completely committed to their goals in the first place.
