Does Breaking Bad glamorize the production and distribution of methamphetamine?

I have heard both sides to this story.

Personally, I think the show teaches you what a horrible drug meth is, and gives a gritty and realistic view of the seedy underbelly of drugs in our society.

What's your view?

To me, it's not a show about meth per se (like CSI is basically a show about CSI). It's about a man who wants to take care of his family after he is dead---noble enough--but ends up making a decision that affects his every move and his relationships with others. I think if it were a show about meth or a strict comedy, then these criticisms might have merit. But it isn't, so they don't.

The show is a dark dramedy---so there are light moments and times where I could see that someone would think it glamorizes meth. However---and I won't spoil anything---the Tortuga episode and the little boy on the bicycle episode really show that the writers aren't treating the drug trade as a joke. In fact, that's a major plot device--how it can change you and those around you and mess up your life. I think lightness the show takes makes those painful moments even more grotesque because you don't always see it coming.

I've watched the show and enjoy it very much. But I have yet to see any scene in that series that glamorizes the production and distribution of meth.

Very much to the contrary - it is portrayed as a dangerous, dirty, socially affecting activity that often results in death from use, abuse or from other users/dealers.

The show contains rich character studies that portray how relatively simple it is to justify any behavior given the right circumstances. Deep convictions are often undermined by circumstances in our lives. It's a reminder to maintain our social networks, open communication and exit strategies for if/when we lose control. Life isn't always so cut & dry. It requires that we pay attention and know when to fold.

Great show. Not an ounce of Glam visible from where I sit.
