Absolutely. I'm actually from the area (about 45-50 minutes away) and remember taking field trips to historical Civil Rights locations in Birmingham on a number of occasions. Back then, I may not have realized the significance, but for MOST people in the area, the Civil Rights movement is a large part of all southerners' history.
I've actually been to the 16th Street Baptist Church twice and seen and heard the history of what happened there. It's a terrible tragedy that is often referenced when talking about the Civil Rights Movement. http://www.16thstreetbaptist.org/templates/System/default.asp?id=45702
On the official Birmingham, Alabama website, you can see that they at least acknowledge the Civil Rights Movement right on the "About Us" page. http://www.informationbirmingham.com/about-birmingham.aspx
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is a great starting place for anyone interested. http://www.bcri.org/index.html
