No. I love the United States, even to the point of having been in the Army, but I don't currently fly our flag. It's a matter of practicality, because I refuse to violate flag etiquette - and I also know that I will not always be able to properly adhere to these standards. I can't afford to install a flag pole with the lighting that's required for nighttime display, and I'm not always here at Retreat to bring down a flag, so I simply don't fly one.
Perhaps, in the future, I'll be able to install a proper flag pole, and be around to do what I need to do to properly care for the flag. However, until or unless that happens, I'll just show my love for this nation in other ways.

However, I try to show the Canadian flag as much as I can indoors, mostly by buying products with the flag. If I had a choice between Canada pencils or regular pencils, I'd buy the Canadian ones. I have flag stickers that I stick just about everywhere. All the bottle openers, coasters, shot glasses I buy have the Canadian flag.
So while I don't have an ACTUAL flag, I do own many things with the flag on them. It doesn't seem like much maybe, but to me, it is.
I just go the extra on Canada day and cover my face in temporary Canada tattoos and wear red :)

For awhile, I had a flag posted in the back of my car window that I had printed off at home. This made me a frequent target of protesters, who identified me as a war loving type. I got very good at explaining the flag can mean many things, and represent many people, including them! In no way was my flag flashing meant to oppress or exclude them. I found it disappointing that many people feel the flag no longer represents them because they hold a different point of view. Talk about disenfranchised!

My paper flag eventually faded from the sunlight and disintegrated from the moisture on the glass. Then I came across a flag at a garage sale. I used it as a curtain to hang in one of my windows for quite some time. Eventually, I gave it to my father.
I have a lot of fun with the flag, and I think it's very colorful. If I could get away with it, I'd wear it too, but I'm still working on that one. I'd really like an American Stars and Stripes bathing suit, to be honest, but it's a little out of my price range too. Gee wiz, the price of country love!

The day after 9/11, I got two metallic flags and put them on either side of my van. I kept those flags on my van for years until I sold it.
Once in a while, someone would complain about those flags. They would say, "Don't you know that you are supporting George Bush?"
I would answer, "Those flags are not about George Bush. Those flags are about ME."
My flag is my flag. I don't worry about bulls... etiquette. I don't need a congressman to tell me how to fold my underwear, and I don't need a congressman or anybody else for that matter to tell me how to fly or fold my flag.

It almost makes you dizzy with all the flag history, but the city is beautiful (thanks to all the flags!)

I got a lot of stuff with the flag of the UK on it from my trips to London.

So yes, I'd fly one. We have smaller flags around our house, but not the official one.

• Everyone responded with interesting answers, thanks! I really appreciate @folkrokfan 's response. The flag is a part of our collective history and an emblem of our shared national spirit - to be honored and respected and I hope this continues to be taught to future generations.

Thanks for your service in the Army. I understand not wanting to violate flag protocol.

Yes! We take great pride in our country and fly the United States flag outside of our home for many months out of the year (not just Memorial Day and Independence Day). http://www.albanyaerialphotos.com/US%20Flag.jpg

I'm Canadian and live in a condo, so flying a flag outdoors is out of the question for me (as it's not allowed to have outdoor flags in our condo). However, I try to show the Canadian flag as much as I can indoors, mostly by buying products with the flag. If I had a choice between Canada pencils or regular pencils, I'd buy the Canadian ones. I would love to, but I have trouble affording the flag pole. I do get those little flags periodically, and they will live in-between the porch railings on our patio until one of the frequent storms we experience rips them into the heavens when I'm not at home. http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/03_02/2BlownOverBNPS_800x548.jpg

Great response.
I'm not sure about the swim suit to be honest. I'm more traditional about the idea that a flag is for flying not for wearing (except perhaps as a small emblem or pin).

Spending time in Mobile Alabama, I was happily surprised to see so many beautiful homes sporting not only the American flag, but also the flag of the state and the flag of the city (the city of Mobile flag shows all the previous flags that have flown over the city, from the French to the Spanish). It almost makes you dizzy with all the flag history, but the city is beautiful (thanks to all the flags!)

Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,
A flash of color beneath the sky:
Hats off!
The flag is passing by!

I live in Germany and I have nothing whatsoever with the german flag on it. I wouldn't fly a german flag even if I had one. I don't see myself as german first, but as a european citizen. So I guess, if I had to fly one, I would always choose the flag of the european union. I even think it's prettier than the german one :D I got a lot of stuff with the flag of the UK on it from my trips to London.

I have never had the extra money for one, but I would if I could. I grew up with an actual pole in our yard that my mom would put up and take down each day. And just because of timing, no one in our family had been in the military since the Civil War, until my uncle, who was in the Vietnam war. Civil War guy was a teen so his son was already too old for WW1. His grandson, an child during WW1, was already too old for WW2. It was his son that went to Vietnam. So yes, I'd fly one. We have smaller flags around our house, but not the official one.
