We spent less than $20,000 and still had a beautiful wedding that our guests enjoyed. We did a few things to save money. I bought my dress at a bridal warehouse store instead of a boutique. Saved at least $1000. My friend and I made the flower centre pieces instead of having a florist do them. We had our ceremony at a hall that had a wonderful caterer who was very resonable and we had an open bar, but they ran a tab and we paid at the end for exactly what was consumed by our guests. Also, we had about 90 guests which saved us some money. We ordered our invitations online and they were half the price.
Many people spend a small fortune on weddings. Many wedding facilities are very expensive and if you have a lot of guests it adds up fast. Also, wedding dresses can be very expensive. I just watched 'Say Yes to the Dress' on TLC and one dress was over $10,000! Most of the dresses were over $5000. People also know what they want and will spend the money to get it, even though there are ways to do things just as nice but cheaper.
My husband I were very careful with how we spent our money for our wedding. We wanted a nice wedding but didn't want to break the bank over it. If you spend money on credit and have to pay it back, your wedding ends up costing you thousands more in interest. With the money we saved on being a little more thrifty we were able to go on a great honeymoon and we had more money for the down payment on our house.

We rented three beach houses for each our families and for friends. That wasn't cheap (but cheaper than hotels!), but you can't put a price on a good time and it's once in a lift time (hopefully!).
If I got married younger I would done it on the beach here in Santa Monica and had a picnic on the cheap! It's 90% the same: same people, same location... just not as fancy food and decorations.
The catering is the biggest piece I think.... $100 to $400 a person for food is just crazy.

..... uhhhh...... yes. We got married in Hawaii and it wasn't cheap and it was only 50 people! We rented three beach houses for each our families and for friends. That wasn't cheap (but cheaper than hotels!), but you can't put a price on a good time and it's once in a lift time (hopefully!).
