You'll find both broad categories and detailed job titles listed on the U.S. government's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) page as well as on the latest Occupational & Wage Estimates (see links below). The broad categories as well as the individual job types sport hyperlinks, which enable you to drill down further in each area for more details. Make sure you scroll all the way down the Occupational Employment & Wage page so you don't miss all of the various categories. Then, click on each job type to drill down for additional job classifications within each area as well as for national, regional and local wage information.

Can someone create (or point me to) a general list of skills that people might have?
I'm building a website where people need to select their skills and expertise from a list. I need help creating the list.
Can someone create or point me to a good, general list of skills that people might have?
I don't want the list to be too huge. Perhaps there can be root and sub-categories (example: Musician -> Drummer), but the list doesn't necessarily need to be that precise.
For example:

Those are professions, not personal skills. Questioner, please clarify what you mean by "skills". Cook or chef? Put me on your beta list if it is personal skills, sounds like something new.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics uses a "Standard Occupational Classification" system for organizing occupations, and most of the entries can be mapped to skills of the type you're requesting. There are 23 top-level categories and significant detail within each, as much or as little as you can use. http://www.bls.gov/soc/soc_majo.htm

I would have gone to this same list if you hadn't beaten me to it. At my last gig we did a bunch of work with high school students and "what do I want to do with my life" exploration tools, which included interests like you mention. The government's got a boatload of stuff, all free for the taking. It's a fair bet that many of the other sites listed just scraped and repurposed the government's base stuff. Why not?
