Are you for or against animal testing? Why or why not?

The Animal Liberation Brigade has taken credit for setting fire to UCLA scientist J. David Jentsch's car in early March. Next Wednesday, April 22, animal rights activists are staging a protest at UCLA. Scientists from the school will be staging a counter-protest against extremist violence.

I'll be writing an editorial next week about this situation for Causecast and would like to get a sense of the public opinion. I'll also be on the scene to get footage of the event and talk to people from each side. What do you think?

Animal testing, while unfortunate, is a necessity for the advancement of medicine used to alleviate the pain of humans or other animals. Advances in computer modeling and biology may replace some of the tests that currently exist, but these types of experiments are presently a poor alternative for tests of products destined for human use due to the complexity of living organisms.

Here are just a few of the problems for which animal testing is an essential ingredient for future success (according to the British Royal Society):

* drug-resistant infections
* mental illnesses
* bone and immune system diseases
* genetic diseases
* blindness/deafness
* HIV and AIDS
* Senile dementia

I'll bet setting fire to that car was really helpful to the environment and to the air that the animals in the vicinity used to breathe.
I don't think that animals should be harmed to create makeup. I do think that it is okay to harm animals to make medicines that help humans to live.

I am for it.....to a degree. Let's say they are developing a medicine for humans, that can possibly save lives. It should, however, be conducted in a smart, ethical manner.

Even I hate to have rats die and be tested, but if it can help cure a disease; it's worth it, plain and simple. It's hard to look someone who's life is turned upside down by a disease, and tell them that we aren't using every possible method to find the cure simply because we don't want to test a few animals.

Against ! God did not create Animals to be abused , As far as using them for medicine testings that sucks to , look at the side effects with all the man made crap that is suppose to heal you ,cure one thing then destroys something else in your body. Look at the Animals who have saved their owners . They have personalities, and they breath air just like us .And they feel pain ......Great Question........STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY.......Good Luck Jonathan !

Well, this comment assumes that God exists and that the user is an authority on God's line of reasoning, but I digress.

Look, there is nobody in the world that would sign a "let's torture animals" petition. Nobody likes it. We all love animals. I have two cats and two dogs, and they are like family to me.

But I think it is unreasonable to assume that this is simply "abuse" and "torture." The British Royal Society argue that "virtually every medical achievement in the 20th century relied on the use of animals in some way." According to Wikipedia, testers "must ensure that alternatives, including non-animal alternatives, have been considered, that the experiments are not unnecessarily duplicative, and that pain relief is given unless it would interfere with the study." I should also say that animal specialists - that is, people who have dedicated their lives to researching animals (and generally do so because they love animals) are far more realistic about research and testing. For instance, my wife is a zoologist. I remember when I first met her, she must have had 15 different animals. But ask her about "exotic species," and she will tell you that they sometimes destroy habitats and must be eliminated. Even PETA (the bane by proxy of any professional animal workers or researchers) (who has a $32 million annual budget) "spends millions on media campaigns telling Americans that eating meat, drinking milk, fishing, hunting, wearing leather shoes, and benefiting from medical research performed on lab rats are all “unethical,”" while simultaneously euthanizing 95% of animals they take in (in 2008, they found 7- yes, 7 animals homes; the Petsmart down the road does that in an hour! Since 1998, they've also killed over 21,339 animals).

God does exist, or I would not be sitting here. getting back to what the Question was, are you for or against? I don't care about the Meds. like I said. I answer the question and I speak my mind. I could care less if you disagree, by the way you spelled it wrong. Your Vet .Tech

By the way would you let them test on your Animals, That you say you Love,if you Love one , You have to Love them all, NO HALF STEPPING

To be fair, mrnemo was saying "digress," not "disagree." I love that this is inciting discussion though! I'm going to try and find a way to work in these comments into my editorial.

Testing on animal is the only way where we can check the effects of medicines on human . Millions livestock are put into slaughter house and are packed as non -veg food ,nobody cries over it and if a scientist uses few animals for their trials then why so much of hue and cry .People should n't forget that medicines which are available to fight diseases today are because of these trials .

I used to be against it, until I had my son. Now I think, if we didn't test products on animals, we'd have to test it on people first. I realize with baby products, we'd probably test it on adults before kids, but how would you like to be the first parent to test a product on your kid? I'm sorry- animals go first, then adults, then children. I don't think that means we need to be cruel, or go to extremes with the testing it's just that we have to test and I'd rather it be an animal before it is a human.
