Yes, they actually were real...although over the years they have been glamorized and romanticized. Same with Masons, etc...

"Illuminati (plural of Latin illuminatus, "enlightened") is a name that refers to several groups, both historical and modern, and both real and fictitious. Historically, it refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on May 1st, 1776. In modern times it is also used to refer to a purported conspiratorial organization which acts as a shadowy power behind the throne, allegedly controlling world affairs through present day governments and corporations, usually as a modern incarnation or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati."

They still are real there are over 200 Illuminati Groups around now. Some are roleplaying games, others are organizations, and spiritual groups, other are Illuminati Heritage groups celebrating their ancestors and Bavarian the Bavarian Order does still exist.

Both. Originally based on the Bavarian Illuminati (founded 1776) it has grown to encompass a number of conspiracy theories. More information in my source link.

This might just be me, but isn't it just a little insulting to the asker to offer a link to wikipedia? Presumably they've already checked that out.

I intended no insult. Presumably, if the asker had consulted wikipedia, they wouldn't have posted the question in the first place since the wikipedia article is fairly thorough in its documentation. The wiki article had a good quick overview with references and links to more specific aspects. The other poster and I answered near-simultaneously or I wouldn't have duplicated their answer/source link.

I do a ton of tech support and regularly deal with questions that could be answered with a quick Google search. I don't feel like it's rude to link to the most obvious source of information just because it is such.

The only way we'll know is if the original asker provides feedback as to whether we were helpful or not!
