I don't think that books can ever give you wisdom. Books are an excellent source for information, but wisdom can only be gained through experience (either your own or somebody else's). There is no substitute for gaining your own experience in life's situations. The only thing close is talking to somebody who has been through those situations. If you can interact with the person, question them about their own experiences, it is close to experiencing it yourself. And only in doing so can you gain true wisdom.

Books are far better for gaining useful information because the author had to spend hours (months!) crafting the answer. Community input is nice, but people tend to either say what they think you want to hear, or they take the opposite stance just to get some dialogue going. Also, a book is something you can return to after you've thought through it, and re-read for additional insights.
