The "left vs. right" dichotomy did have its origins in the seating assignment in legislatures, but it was the French and not the Americans or the British who were responsible. Early in the French Revolution, the king was still the head of state, and in legislative assemblies the royalists sat on the right side of the chamber while the radicals sat on the left. The modern French republic preserves this seating arrangement.

Why are leftist political parties called the Left? Is it because of the sitting sides in early U.S. Congress / British Parliament?
