The Spanish funded exploration and conquest seeking Gold and riches.
Converting the natives to Christianity was named as the second objective.

Francisco Pizarro was born in poverty and so he was driven to obtain riches for himself and Spain.

There were many stories about the gold and jewels that were available in South America.
