vihara is a sankrit or pali word for manastry ( buddist ) wikipedia says"a secluded space in which to walk"
though primarily it meant for those nomadic buddists for shelter in rainy days and to meditate peacefully as time passed viharas played a role more than it actually meant for . there are viharas which developed into universities like nalanda and used to study buddhist texts and for teaching buddism .
