The actual origins of the word Guatemala are unclear but many believe the word means "land of trees" in the language of the Maya-Toltec.
Others think the Nahuatl expression Quauhtitlan, which means "between the trees" is another way Guatemala came about. That was what the Tlaxcaltecan soldiers who accompanied Pedro de Alvarado during the Spanish Conquest named this territory, which translated to their language means "Quiche," which means "many trees."
