"The bighorn sheep originally crossed over the Bering land bridge from Siberia: the population in North America peaked in the millions, and the bighorn sheep entered into the mythology of Native Americans. However, the population crashed by 1900 down to several thousand. Conservation efforts (in part, by the Boy Scouts) have restored the population."
Over 600 lived in the Rocky Mountain National Park area of Utah in 2007.

According to the Naitonal Wildlife Federation's magazine, about 75,000 of the 3 subspecies of bighorn sheep remain in 20 states and provinces from Mexico to Canada. The Sierra Nevada subspecies has just over 400 and is endangered. In all the time I've spent in the High Sierras of California, I've never seen one...drat.
