First, it is important to have His Name straight... especially for that particular story.
His Name is Yahweh, Hebrew tetragramaton, YHWH. There is much proof on this, and there was never a "J" in the Hebrew language.
And while it is always important, this is an instance where they asked Pharaoh "Who is Yahweh?" and he did not know Who He was. (This is in the Hebrew text - again, no "J" in Hebrew - it was not Jehovah.) The Egyptians did not worship Yahweh in any way, shape, or form.
And, yes, it proved He was superior.
Interestingly enough, one of the reasons it proved He was superior was that every single plague that came upon the Egyptians represented power over one of their gods.
Not only could the Egyptian "holy men" not stop the plagues or recreate all of them by their "magics", it showed that each of the gods represented by the plague had no actual power, but Yahweh did. For instance: plague of frogs, power over the Frog Goddess, Heqet - only Yahweh's representative Mosheh (commonly called Moses) could stop them.

Scripture for Story
Exodus 5:2
And Pharaoh said, Who is Yahweh, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not Yahweh, neither will I let Israel go.
or as Kohlenberg's Hebrew -English Interlinear renders it:
"but-he-said Pharaoh who? Yahweh that I-should-obey to-voice-of-him to-let-go Israel not I-know Yahweh and-so Israel not I-will-let-go"
