I agree with the anti-hero answer in a literal sense. From a personal perspective, I view Dexter as a hero. Sure, he is a serial killer and operates on the basis of vigilante justice. However, I find, not only his eradication of "bad guys" heroic, but also the fact that he has been able to channel and control his sickness in such a way. I also admire his stringent commitment to Harry's code. I wish that level of integrity was seen more often.

He is obviously not the villain on the show -- each season features a different villain. But being the protagonist does not automatically make him a hero in the classic sense. Anti-hero would be the most suitable term for the character.

I believe that Dexter is about a serial killer, who kills other serial killers and works as a police detective catching other serial killers.
As the main character Dexter is the protagonist and anyone, good or bad, who opposes him is an antagonist.
When he is helping the police catch other serial killers Dexter is doing good and can be considered a hero. When hunting his victims he is dong evil and is a villain, except that he probably thinks that by killing serial killers he is doing good, so he's sort of a hero then, too, sometimes.
He could be considered an example of someone who does good, saving the unknown future victims of the serial killers he kills, for evil purposes, the sadistic pleasure he gets from dominating his victims and deciding when they die. And since he knows that good will result from his crimes, he can delude himself into thinking that his main purpose for committing those crimes is to do good. A delusion that is far too common.
Anyway, Dexter can be a hero and a villain at the same time, doing something that is both at least slightly good and at least slightly evil for mixed motives that are both at least slightly good and at least slightly evil.
Anyway, I don't watch Dexter so I hope my impression of the series is fairly accurate.

Do you see Dexter as a hero or a villain?
The main character in Showtime's Dexter has a unique philosophy.
He only kills the obviously proven guilty that have slipped through the cracks in our justice system.
Do you see him as a devilishly smart villain?
Or a sick and twisted hero?

Alas, he doesn't just kill serial killers (he's killed 3... I think) he also is able to pick out criminals that have done heinous things and have been able to slip through the hands of justice.
He doesn't just kill anyone who opposes him, he is one of the rare sociopaths that follows a strict set of rules.
The only thing you said that upset me was... "I don't watch Dexter".
It's a surprising and well written show! I'd give a few episodes a try, I think you'd enjoy it!
