For some extent, of course feeling loss of control makes us stress. We as sentient beings, seem to be wired to have to feel in control. Feeling total loss of control can be traumatic. And feeling that no matter what we do we cannot change our fate results in "learned helplessness" in which we will feel despair and stop to try. An experiment with lab rats (or were they dogs?) showed that the animals too can feel this "learned helplessness" if they cannot escape from pain/ unpleasant stimuli no matter what they do. (and it was a pretty inhuman experiment )
But as my Philosophy professor said, control is actually an illusion. We do not have control at anything, it only seems that we do. Any accidents or catastrophes can befall us anytime. Meteor can hit us anytime. Terorrist can attack anytime.
Asian people mostly acknowledge this, their need for control is much lower. Since my country is dropped into a political turmoil and terorrist attacked, at first our reaction is fear and trauma. Then, we got over it. We won't be able to live normally if we continue to be afraid of something we can't control. Sometimes we just have to let something go in order to live normally. We cannot function in heightened sense of fear every time.

Perhaps, what we seek is the difference between safety and danger. A person can be in control of their raft while moving down white water. However, a level 5, may be navigated by only a few people in the world and some of them may die. Therefore, the goal may be to navigate the level 5 because of the extreme risk and reward of being famous even at the peril of death. Our goals determine our risks.
