I would say not good.

Obama won the state with 57%-40%. Both the current Democratic senators from MI won reelection by very comfortable margins. Also the two current state wide republican office holders do not appear to be very conservative.

One way to tell is an area might be receptive to a conservative candidate is the size and influence of conservative 3rd parties in that state. It looks like the Constitution party (a very right wing party) is pretty small and does not get very many votes, same with the Libertarians.

Now there might be a Republican resurgence in the next 4 - 8 years, but i doubt this would translate into being a good year for a Conservative republican.

The only thing that might change this analysis is if your friend had decent name recognition or fairly deep pockets.

America is a right of center nation, so with the right team and campaign a Republican should be able to win in MI. I just doubt it is currently a good time to do so.
