Check out weRead as another good example. It lets you list, rate and write reviews for the books you have read. It's hooked into the web site weread.com.

Now, if you want to create your own facebook apps. There are several ways you can do this.
1. Code it yourself using the facebook API.

2. You can use Adobe's Flash and Flex to build an app.

3. I would recommend looking at a widge/app builder from a company like widgebox.com. They can do some very cool stuff very quickly.

Or there's "How to write a FaceBook Application in 10 minutes", but you need to know how to do coding in Javascript or PHP to take advantage of this guys advice.

How do I create a Facebook app that will let people check off a list of books they have read from a list of the 100 best novels ever?
Several friends were passing around this list on Facebook of the best 100 novels ever written. You had to place an X on a text note. There has to be a better way to do this than just passing around a text note. I'd like to have the novels listed and a check box by each one. Also maybe a short text field to write a comment about the novel. Then when you submit the page, something would get posted to your wall.
Is that possible? How hard is it to create a facebook app?

I do not know the answer to your question. I am interested, though, in how the decision is being made as to what constitutes the "best 100 novels". Amazon best sellers? Your favorites? Harvard classics? Something based on Univeristy of Chicago's curriculum? And these would only be novels originally written in English? Or would they include translations of great novels by writers throughout the world?

I don't have the answer either, but wanted to point out such a list for anyone who is interested. I have no vested interest in promoting this book or its author, but have read it and enjoyed it thoroughly. The title is Thirteen Ways of Looking at the Novel, by Jane Smiley. She is a past winner of the Pulitzer, so her credentials are certainly in order. She decided to read 100 novels, and did so, in preparation for a new book on what exactly makes up a novel. The result is this book, and within its pages are brief reviews of each of the 100 she read. It is really quite interesting, especially if you are looking for something to read. There is bound to be something there you have not read, and her brief commentary can be very helpful in determining your next read. And she fortunately avoided the temptation to label her list as any sort of "best" list. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go checkout the list over at Facebook.
