Google does go down sometimes. see links below: -

However, Google is a very large company with a lot of resources and has been in existence sine 1998. Twitter in spite of it popularity has only been in existence since 2006. Twitter's revenue is still in the millions while Google's revenue is in the billions. Mahalo was launched in 2007. Not sure how much their revenue is.
So, why is twitter and mahalo down more than google?
1) Google is larger, more established, makes more money, has more resources.
2) Both twitter and mahalo have become popular very quickly. They get new users ever day and the sudden grown spurt may be why they are sometimes down or slow as they try to deal with the influx of new users.
To be honest though, Mahalo is not down that much. It is sometimes slow but its downtime is minimal in my opinion. Twitter is the one with the problem. As you rightly said, they created a site just to let people know if twitter is down. Here is another site that will tell you if any site is down or if it is just you.

"Pingdom has done an accounting of the uptime of the top 20 websites on the internet (according to Alexa). Their results show that Google has suffered a mere 7 minutes of downtime thus far in 2007, or 0.00540123332% downtime, and can thus boast uptime of an impressive 99.9945988%."

They have so much downtime because have so many users accessing the same page at the same time. For this reason, a website could be down. Google suffers from downtime as well just like any other site with millions of visitors a day.

Which site is down more, Twitter or Mahalo? Why are both of these sites always down every day?
Is it ironic or crazy that someone created a site called Is Twitter Down, just to let people know if the site is down? http://istwitterdown.com
Why is it so hard to keep a website up 100% of the time? Google is always up, why can't Twitter or Mahalo stay up all the time?

Looks like google also had some down time, "Pingdom has done an accounting of the uptime of the top 20 websites on the internet (according to Alexa). I think Twitter is down most of the time than Mahalo because Twitter has more users visiting online. They have so much downtime because have so many users accessing the same page at the same time. For this reason, a website could be down. Google suffers from downtime as well just like any other site with millions of visitors a day.
