How can I get more followers on Twitter ?

I have found that Follow Friday is a great way to build up your Followers. If you find others with your same likes and interests the more likely they will be to follow you back.
I have also found that Twitter is a more promo type application. I often use it to promote my freelance writing and my AC page. If you have something on the web that you want others to see then promote it but remember to promote someone else before you promote your own. This works. The concept is this...the other person is flattered that you cared enough to help them promote and in return will help you promote etc.
It takes a bit of work and the key is to promote more for others than you do for yourself. Don't limit yourself to one area either. You also have to view and manage through Twitter finding people to follow. Most times people will follow you back just because.
Just remember a little time and effort on your part will net bigger results later.

The second way is to turn on auto-follow. You can use a service like SocialToo. This way whenever someone follows you you follow them back... when you turn this on you will have a slow but steady growth.
Another way is to mention your twitter id on some high profile podcasts - one podcast that's easy to get involved in is This Week In Startups, and the host (hi Jason) is always happy to promote individuals with intelligent things to say.
One last thing you can try is to have conversations with people on twitter who have alot of followers themselves - this will help get you noticed.
