There are lots of reason why there are certain men who are abusive to their girlfriends. The most common reason is the experience they had during childhood. Most abusive men came from abusive parents or guardians who abuse them verbally, physically or sexually.

They may not be aware of this especially if they don't seek any counseling or psychologist to help them handle this kind of attitude. They want to seek revenge and subconsciously they are trying to hurt others as a revenge. They want to show that they are not helpless that they are superior and they want to get back at those who have molested them or hurt them but they are not aware that they are hurting a different person.

Others who are abusive but has no history of abuse, they are just plain egoistic and want to show their superiority over a female. Some men also physically abuse their girlfriend because of some triggering factor like constant nagging of their girlfriends. This can cause them to lose their temper and control and hurt their girlfriends during heated arguments.

That's a tough one.

I was in an abusive relationship in my 20s. I found out later, this guy had violent relationships with many of his ex girlfriends. Of course, I was just a statistic at the time, but it depends on a lot of factors. In my case, the cycle was never broken. He was apparently abused as a child and felt that acceptable behavior, or that's what his mom thought at the time.

Studies have shown us that this happens for many reasons. Sometimes they were abused as a child, sometimes drugs and or alcohol are contributing factors, some are just generally mean.

It's important to know the signs of an abusive person.

It really depends on the individual but I'll provide you a link for further reading.

An abusive relationship takes two at least which requires their partner enabling them somehow even if it's just by being present. Leave and the abuse stops until someone else chooses them and starts it up again.

While it may not be so simple in practice, it's true. I may be addicted to smoking but if I don't have smokes, I'm a non-smoker until I get one.
