At this time there are only about 80 residents left in the city of Picher. This was due to the government Superfund clean up effort.
The government has been buying out homes so that the residents could go where there was no lead dust contamination and no danger of the old unsupported mines collapsing.
The tornado happened while many people were leaving the city due to this superfund clean up. The tornado and the deaths of 6 Picher citizens and distruction of 100 homes changed the plans of some people that had not yet decided to leave.
City hall will close in September 2009 and the school closed forever in July.
