Do you think it is OK for the Social Security to pay full benefits to divorced women when the ex dies?
If a woman is married to a man for 10 years at any time in his life, when she retires, she gets a check equal to 50% of his benefit, and when he passes, she gets 100% AND there could be as many as 5 of these ex wives being paid!!!
Also do you think an ex should have to prove they lived together? (I ask this in regard to women who married just to be covered when they themselves grew old. They never really were wives, just married on paper get the benefits later on.)

If the amount of social security a woman can collect based on her own earnings record is lower than that of her ex-spouse, it is probably because she put her career on hold to support him in his career while raising their children. If her benefits were higher, she'd be collecting on her own earnings history-- so this provision in the law is designed to protect women. I think it is absolutely appropriate.

Retirement Social Security is not based on need. It is an entitlement.

And if a 57 year old woman married a man she is not in love with, is not living with, is not having kids with, is not heterosexual, is not having sex with him... and THEN collects 100% of his social security when he dies? Whom is that protecting?
