Without commenting on this particular case, let me say that I support the death penalty. The reason for this is that I don't believe that there is an afterlive so murder is the worse thing that you can do. I believe that the concept of punishing people for their crimes is a major reason for the rise of civilization, that failure to do so results in a fragmented society where every family looks to and enforces their own justice.
I do believe that every effort should be made to ensure guilt. Where DNA evidence may play a part, DNA evidence has to be examined, and those states who don't have this requirement should not be allowed to execute criminals. There are still a few states like this left.
I believe it was Oliver Wendell Holmes who made the statement that ," it is better for a thousand guilty people to go free than for one innocent man to go to prison." This is another of those silly statements by persons of the privileged class. Actually it would be far greater for society for one innocent man to go to prison if it meant the incarceration of a thousand guilty persons. It would mean a safer saner society.
Are innocent persons sometimes executed? I have no doubt of this. It is one of those tragedies that has to be endured in order to ensure the continuation of civilization. I call it, "Biting the Bullet of Civilization."

When the trial ended December 22, 2008, the judge imposed the death sentence, along with 63 years incarceration for prior convictions from the Addison/Bell-Rodgers crime spree in the week before the Office Briggs was killed. He's also the only person currently on Death Row in NH.
