I've never heard this question before asking specifically about pot smokers. I've always heard this question about people who smoke cigarettes.
All the people I have encountered who smoke do respect the rights of those who do not engage in that behavior. Respecting an individual's right to not engage in the behavior, as opposed to pressuring the individual to do it, is one way. Not smoking in an enclosed area with people who choose not to is yet another way, since contact highs are a possibility.
The majority of pot smokers tend to be reclusive while using anyway, so social interaction is rare while using. This is, of course, due to the fact that it is illegal and the pot smoker does not want to get caught or be seen engaging in that behavior by someone who is opposed to it. I believe this is also part of why pot smokers are known to be paranoid, because they don't want to get caught and knows it's painfully obvious they are high to anyone who sees them or talks to them
