So tell me: What does a newbie need to know about Mahalo Answers?

Beyond the obvious things, like playing nicely with others and completely answering a question, are there unwritten (or written but buried) rules of etiquette that I ought to know? Are there any website quirks I should know about? Did something confuse you when you were green?

My first Mahalo dollar goes to the person who can save me the trouble of learning the hard way.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1. People get defensive when you use the "fact refute" button. Use it lightly and try to always add a source for your refutation when doing it.
2. If something doesn't work, it is likely a glitch. You can report glitches by email feedback@mahalo.com.
3. Don't click an answer as unhelpful simply because you disagree with it. This should be reserved for answers that does not answer the question or contain very bad information. This is a privilege you get one you have reached yellow belt.
4. Report any answers or questions that contain attacks, bad language, threats, or dangerous information by clicking on the "Report" button at the bottom of the question or answer. Mahalo is very good at responding.
5. Mahalo has an IRC room where some users hang out. You can find out more on: http://greenhouse.mahalo.com/Contact it is the #Mahalo room.
6. I am currently the reigning queen--crowned by Mahalo CEO Jason when I passed him in points. Feel free to direct question me about anything--problems or questions. You can do so privately or publicly by clicking on my profile.

Yeah... if it appears that darcy is going to the verbal mattresses with @jasoncalacanis, don't jump in and defend anyone. Just let the music play.

Don't ask me know I know this. ;)

6. Proof-read your answers for spelling, grammar and clarity.
7. Always cite where you obtained your information from.
8. Provide links back to information you cite.
9. Use images and photos to support your answers
10. Mahalo Answers is a knowledge exchange, so please focus your attention on providing high-quality answers and refrain from excessive joking and/or unrelated behavior.

all the best,

Jason

You'll probably be more successful if you add lots of links, photos and video. The more you add the more like it seems that you will get noticed. At least that's my experience.

Good Luck!

Provided it's relevant. A lot of people (like me) are tired of people throwing crap into their answer that doesn't belong. Sometimes, short and sweet is better.

Not really, I found the website to be very helpful, nothing seemed very confusing, everything was intuitive. It really is just that straight forward, people ask questions, and other people answer them.

OH, now that I think about it, the one thing I didn't catch for a while, was the small bar below people's avatars. The colour of it, is the colour belt they have, and that represents the rank that they have (or rather, how long they've been around). As you can see on me, I'm still a yellow belt, but I'm on my way to being green. You can click where it says how many points you have at the top right (or just look at your own profile), to see what limits there are in place for each rank.

Anyway, welcome to Mahalo, hope you enjoy the website and find it useful, I know I have.

Some good things to keep in mind:
You can interlink Mahalo pages in your questions/answers by adding [ [ title of Mahalo page ] ] or [ [ title of Mahalo page | title to display ] ] (but without the spaces). e.g. Where can I find good apps for my T Mobile G1?

Also, you can have your questions answered without even having to login to Answers by emailing answers@mahalo.com. Just put the question as the subject and any details in the body and it'll show up on Answers and the responses will be emailed back to you!

And most importantly:
We have a very low tolerance for shenanigans. If we feel a question/answer isn't helpful we'll filter it out. This may seem heavy-handed, but I think if you'll ask around most everyone would agree that the quality of the responses are TOP NOTCH. We go to great lengths to inspire a community of helpfulness and trust!

I'm a Mahalo dev.
