Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry which utilizes only three lines with grammatical breaks between them. A haiku is usually thought provoking and deep though it relies on simple and natural imagery to convey its message. The important place to start is with a subject which you have- although it would be more simple to just say your haiku will be about Jesse Owens. The other concepts can be tapped into through the imagery your poem will evoke.
Structurally, haiku are written with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 syllables again in the third and final line.
To begin, set the scene for your poem. Think about the feelings relevant to Jesse Owens, what he went through, and what he accomplished. Utilize words that refernce nature and the seasons to describe the setting and help the reader of the haiku feel the emotion of the moment. Then show a contrast or a comparison- in this case a stark contrast could be shown through the descriptive use of color.
Good luck. It would be very interesting to read what you come up with.
