I need a checklist for hiring an independent contractor (1099) in California.

I am a very small business owner who will be hiring an independent contractor (1099) to perform some engineering work for my company.

I am looking for an extensive checklist of all the things I need to do (or consider) to comply with all laws, taxes, and protect me from any possible liability. I am familiar with the issues involved, I just want to make sure that I don't forget or consider an issue.

I believe I have already found the right person and the scope of the work has already somewhat been defined.

I've also done some research for you and these might be additional to what you already have, so I hope they help. Link included with short explanation of why its included:

From the FindLaw site this page lists checkpoints and documentation you may wish to view before hiring:
http://smallbusiness.findlaw.com/employment-employer/employment-employer-other/employment-employer-hiring-contractor-steps.html

Article that lists FAQs and common checklist items:
http://www.peralta.cc.ca.us/Projects/3/Independent%20Contractor%20Guidelines/Info%20re%20Independent%20Contractors.pdf

Enzine article listing some of the risks involved in hiring ICs
http://ezinearticles.com/?Independent-Contractors-Or-1099-Employees---The-Risks&id=2256720

A document checklist produced by another group for hiring contractors - you may wish to check this to confirm you have everything covered

I hope these help

Thanks, exactly the sort of information I was looking for. While I am generally familiar with this topic there are a some items on these lists which I had not considered. One issue which did not seem to get mentioned is under what conditions I can be sued for something my contractor does and what I can do to protect myself.
