Slumdog Millionare screenplay winner: what's with the beads?

Simon Beaufoy was wearing beads under his tux jacket. What were they, and why? A friend of mine watching was curious.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I didn't even notice this, but could it possibly be a mala?

from wikipedia:
A Japa mala' or mala (Sanskrit:माला; mālā, meaning garland[1]) (Tib. threngwa[2])is a set of beads commonly used by Hindus and Buddhists, usually made from 108 beads, though other numbers, usually divisible by 9, are also used. Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or the name or names of a deity. This practice is known in Sanskrit as japa

I'm thinking it's a necklace he might have gotten in India.

Thanks for answer. They look blue, and long enough to loop around the chest once. I love the picture, but do you have more info on the beads history & significance?
